Rafah Crossing Point: The Gateway Between Gaza and Egypt

A Lifeline for Palestinians

Mabar Rafaḥ, commonly known as the Rafah Crossing Point, serves as the only official border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Situated in northern Sinai, this vital passage facilitates the movement of people and goods between the two territories.

A Divided Population

Palestinians holding dual citizenship have often faced lengthy delays and restrictions when attempting to cross into Egypt. This has resulted in a significant backlog of individuals waiting to enter the country. In a recent development, the first civilians from the Gaza Strip have successfully crossed the Rafah Crossing Point as of May 7, 2024.

Israeli Control

Unlike other Gazan border crossings, Rafah is not controlled by Israel. Following Hamas's takeover of Gaza in October 2007, Israel closed its crossings with the territory. This move has left Rafah as the only lifeline for Palestinians seeking to enter or exit Gaza.

The Israeli military retains control over the airspace and maritime borders of the Gaza Strip, imposing significant restrictions on movement. The Rafah Crossing Point remains a crucial point of passage for Palestinians, providing a vital connection to the outside world.
